FreeCell: learn through an example

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of FreeCell. Build four suit foundations from ace to king. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Check the rule that explains your first action. Use the example below to understand a decision.

One face-up deck. Transfer capacity counts available cells and spare empty columns. Free solo play, no wagering.

Try a more deliberate round

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Refer to the controls when needed.

What the game asks you to do

Build four suit foundations from ace to king. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Check the rules when you are unsure.

The playing sequence

  1. Build down in alternating colours; four cells each hold one card. Empty columns accept any legal group.
  2. Select a face-up card and then the destination pile or Empty slot.
  3. Use foundations where available; full Spider or Scorpion runs clear automatically.
  4. Undo reverses a choice. New deal shuffles again.

How to interact with the game

Click or tap cards and piles. Wide tableaus scroll inside the game; use Undo, Hint and New deal where shown. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Use one clear input at a time.

One way to understand the rules

With two empty cells and no spare empty column, a group of at most three cards can move together. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Choose a deliberate next step.

Where a round can go wrong

Random deals are not guaranteed solvable. A hint is a legal move, not a winning strategy. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
