Snake: how a round works

Bring your attention to one round of Snake. Keep collecting apples. Hitting a wall or your body ends the round; filling the entire board wins. Use the example below to understand a decision. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Something to practise

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Refer to the controls when needed.

The objective of a round

Keep collecting apples. Hitting a wall or your body ends the round; filling the entire board wins. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. The example below illustrates a decision.

Work through the instructions

  1. Press Play to start the movement.
  2. Turn with arrow keys, swipes or the on-screen direction buttons.
  3. Each apple adds ten points and makes the snake longer.
  4. Pause when needed or start a new round.

Choosing and moving on screen

Keyboard arrows, swipe gestures or the four direction buttons. Play / pause controls the movement. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Use one clear input at a time.

One way to understand the rules

When moving right, you may turn up or down, but cannot turn immediately left into your own neck. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Consider the next action carefully.

Avoid this misunderstanding

The snake continues moving between inputs. Plan a route with space to turn. Compare the situation with the worked example. Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart.
