A practical guide to Lights Out

Choose a round of Lights Out and settle into its rules. Turn every light off. Every supplied starting state is made by valid flips from an all-off board and is therefore solvable. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Practice beyond the first move

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Notice the feedback after each input.

What the game asks you to do

Turn every light off. Every supplied starting state is made by valid flips from an all-off board and is therefore solvable. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

Work through the instructions

  1. Select a light or an unlit tile.
  2. The selected tile and its orthogonal neighbours switch state.
  3. Plan flips so that previously cleared rows stay cleared.
  4. Use Undo to try another approach.

Your inputs

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

A useful example

Tapping the centre changes five cells. Tapping a corner changes three. Diagonal neighbours are not affected. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Keep the game’s format in mind.

A mistake to avoid

An unlit tile can still be tapped; it may be necessary to solve the board. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart.
